The Pieman River Cruise
The Pieman River Cruise operates daily on the magnificent Pieman River and the return trip between Corinna and the Pieman Heads takes four hours. The cruise aboard the Arcadia II, takes passengers to the Pieman Heads, where the boat berths for 90 minutes, allowing time for lunch and to explore the wild west coast beach, strewn with logs; the scene of many shipwrecks from the time when Corinna was a thriving town in the late 1800’s.
The Arcadia II is a magnificent 17m craft, built of Huon pine timber in 1939. With a leisurely cruising speed of 9 knots, she is the only Huon pine river cruiser in the world. Originally a luxury pleasure craft based in Hobart, she was requisitioned to serve in the Second World War in New Guinea as a supply ship. She then spent several seasons as a scallop fishing boat on the east coast of Tasmania and in 1961 was commissioned as a cruise boat on Macquarie Harbour and the Gordon River.
In 1970 Arcadia 11 was moved to the Pieman River where the Ellis brothers introduced the first regular cruise. With the rebirth of the Corinna township as a wilderness experience, it is hoped she will be in survey for many years to come.
A second vessel, Sweetwater, is a comfortable 9 seater river pontoon. The two hour smooth water cruise visits Lover’s Falls and Australia’s oldest inland shipwreck, the SS Croydon.
Spot White-bellied and Wedge-tailed eagles. Enjoy the pristine beauty of the Pieman River, drifting past stands of huon pine, sassafras, myrtle and blackwood trees whilst enjoying morning or afternoon tea in the wilderness.
