The Winged House
The Winged House, near Wynyard, provides fully serviced, luxury accommodation with stunning views; waves breaking on the rocks to the east; Rocky Cape National Park to the west.
The Winner of an Institute of Architects Award 2009 and Australian Steel Institute (ASI) Design Award 2008 - Highly Commended for Innovation and Creativity, the house is the work of internationally recognised architect and artist Richard Goodwin.
The ASI Citation reads:
‘The brief was to create a retreat - a place to get away from the complexity of city life with its daily froth of news, politics and social events. A place to uplift the spirits from the dense memory of work; a place that would quietly insist on a sense of peace and as a work of art, seek a continuing and deeper response.’
With a gourmet kitchen and full luxury services, the two double-bedroom house attracts travellers looking for a memorable Tasmanian experience. Since opening in 2008, the Winged House has featured in international travel magazines; Conde Naste Traveller, Harper’s Bazaar, Travel and Leisure and Vogue Magazine and accommodated guests from China, Singapore, Canada, USA, the UK, as well as mainland Australia.
Arriving at the house, your first view is of a plane or bird - or a giant silver moth - perched halfway down the giant precipitous slope of Table Cape and poised to take off. As you drive closer, it stays and waits; becoming more house, less bird. On entering you are suspended, not just by the grandeur of the view beneath your feet, but by this moment of arrested flight.
