World Heritage Cruises
Located in Strahan, on Tasmania’s rugged west coast, World Heritage Cruises, offer the ultimate wilderness experience aboard the Eagle, a 35 metre catamaran launched in 2007. Purpose-built to minimise the impact on the river embankments and the most advanced vessel to cruise the Gordon River, the large windows, spacious layout and excellent seating provide the maximum in passenger comfort, including wheelchair users.
The cruise includes a visit to Hell’s Gates, the 200 metre entrance to Macquarie Harbour, named by convicts on their way to the infamous prison on Sarah Island. Visit some of Australia’s oldest convict ruins on the island, created to put the ‘fear of God’ into the convicts of Van Diemen’s Land. The 18th Century British penal colony provides a fascinating tale of human hardship, brought vividly to life by expert guides. Hear the intriguing story of Macquarie Harbour and its settlement. Disembark at Heritage Landing to explore the rainforest and spend time at the base of a Huon pine tree, a mere seedling 2,000 years ago.
At midday, enjoy a sumptuous buffet lunch aboard the Eagle, which includes smoked salmon, cold meats, salads, fresh fruit, Tasmanian cheeses and locally baked bread rolls. Snacks and beverages are also available for purchase from the two fully licensed bars, throughout the cruise. Smoking is only permitted on the outer decks.
Five successive generations of the Grining family have explored every bend of the mighty Gordon, since ferrying their first passengers in 1896 and with the sixth generation following in their parents’ footsteps, the family name will remain synonymous with the Gordon River for many years to come.
