The Old Cable Station

The dining roomExperience the atmosphere of the Old Cable Station, which formerly housed the submarine cable, which crossed Bass Strait from Cape Otway to Stanley, in 1935. The decommissioned buildings, after extensive renovation, now provide boutique guest house accommodation, complete with a country restaurant, serving contemporary fare. A choice of modern or colonial-style, self-catering or bed and breakfast options, are available in the historic, weatherboard homestead; all rooms having rural and distant sea views.

Fresh seasonal ingredients are sourced for the restaurant, including scallops, octopus and crayfish from the nearby port of Stanley and neighbouring producers, who supply the tender, grass fed beef, venison and vegetables. Patrons can experience innovative dishes served by Mick Whatley, co-owner and self-taught chef, who regularly attends cooking schools in Europe. Produce platterMick and partner, Charlotte, specialise in seasonal, slow, producer luncheons, providing a unique opportunity for diner and producer to meet. At other times, self-confessed foodies are invited to register for weekend, in-house cooking schools.

A few metres away, expansive sandy beaches reach as far as the eye can see and spotting fairy penguins returning home to their burrows, at dusk, can be fascinating. Surrounded by rolling green fields and overlooking Bass Strait and Three Hummock Island, the Old Cable Station Retreat is a wonderfully, relaxing place for a holiday, corporate function or formal wedding.
