The complete North West Tasmania guide

How to plan a trip through Tasmania’s wild north-west and west coast, step by step.

1. Understand the region

The North West has three distinct zones:

  • The Cradle Coast — the farmland and towns along Bass Strait: Devonport, Ulverstone, Penguin, Burnie, Wynyard, Boat Harbour, Stanley and Smithton.
  • The mountains — Cradle Mountain and the high country of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
  • The west coast — the rainforest and rivers of the Tarkine, and the old mining and port towns of Corinna, Zeehan, Queenstown and Strahan.

The region is the Country of several Aboriginal nations of north-west Tasmania, whose cultural sites along the coast, such as middens and rock engravings, are among the most significant in Australia.

2. Get there

  • Spirit of Tasmania sails between Geelong and Devonport, carrying cars. Ideal for a road trip.
  • Flights land at Devonport, Burnie (Wynyard) and Launceston.

See getting there.

3. Plan your route

A classic loop runs Devonport – Cradle Mountain – Strahan – Corinna – Arthur River – Stanley – Burnie – Devonport. Driving times:

Leg Approx. time
Devonport to Cradle Mountain 1 h 15 min
Cradle Mountain to Strahan 2 h 30 min
Strahan to Corinna (via Zeehan) 1 h 30 min + Fatman barge
Corinna to Arthur River (Western Explorer) 2 h (unsealed)
Arthur River to Stanley 1 h
Stanley to Devonport 1 h 45 min

4. Prioritise

  1. Cradle Mountain and Dove Lake.
  2. Stanley and The Nut.
  3. Gordon River cruise from Strahan.
  4. The Tarkine and Arthur River.
  5. Boat Harbour Beach and Table Cape.

5. Book ahead

Book Cradle Mountain accommodation, Gordon River cruises and Spirit of Tasmania sailings well in advance in summer and school holidays.

6. Prepare for the weather

Weather changes quickly, especially at Cradle Mountain and on the west coast. Carry warm and waterproof layers year-round.

7. Parks pass

A Tasmanian parks pass is required for Cradle Mountain and other national parks. Buy a holiday pass if you are visiting several parks.

8. Choose your bases

Good bases include Cradle Mountain, Strahan, Stanley and Devonport or Burnie. See where to stay.

Suggested trip lengths

  • 3 days: Cradle Mountain and Stanley. See 3-day itinerary.
  • 5 days: the full loop. See 5-day road trip.
  • 7+ days: add the Overland Track or more time on the west coast.
