Tips

  • Book ahead, especially in summer.
  • Window seats are better on calm days.
  • Bring a warm jacket for the deck.

Sarah Island history

Sarah Island was established in 1822 as a penal settlement for convicts who reoffended in the colony. It became notorious for harsh conditions and remote isolation, and it was also a busy shipbuilding site before closing in 1833. Guided walks bring the ruins and stories to life.

Heritage Landing

The rainforest boardwalk at Heritage Landing introduces Huon pine, a slow-growing conifer that can live for thousands of years.
