Cradle Mountain’s summit stands at 1,545 m. The climb is one of Tasmania’s classic day walks, but it is serious: the final section is a steep scramble over large dolerite boulders, and conditions change fast.
The route
- Start at Dove Lake or Ronny Creek.
- Climb to Marions Lookout (steep, with chains on one section).
- Continue across the plateau to Kitchen Hut, an emergency shelter.
- Follow the marked route up the flank of the mountain, then scramble over boulders to the summit.
- Return the same way, or descend via the Face Track to Dove Lake (steep).

Time and fitness
Allow 6–8 hours return. You need good fitness, confidence on steep rock and a head for heights. Children and inexperienced walkers should consider Marions Lookout instead.
Safety essentials
- Start early and set a turnaround time.
- Do not attempt the summit in wind, rain, snow, ice or cloud.
- Carry waterproof and warm layers, food, water, a map and an emergency beacon (PLB).
- Register your walk at the start.
Alternatives if the weather turns
If cloud or wind rolls in, settle for Marions Lookout or Crater Lake, or walk the sheltered Dove Lake Circuit. The summit will still be there next time — many experienced walkers turn back on the plateau.
Overland Track connection
The summit side trip is also popular with walkers on the first day of the Overland Track, which begins at Ronny Creek. Overland walkers need separate permits and bookings in the main season.
