Table Cape Lighthouse Experience

In September 2010, Table Cape Lighthouse became the first Commonwealth-owned, operational lighthouse in Tasmania to be used for guided tours and tells the stories and history of the light. Operated by David Roberts-Thomson of Van Diemen Quality Bulbs, who grew up on the tulip farm next door, the tours showcase both the lighthouse and the farm, which has been in the family for over 100 years.

Visitors are able to wind their way up the original, cast iron staircase, of the 25 metre high lighthouse, to the lantern room, pausing at the windows that provide picturesque snapshots of the northwest coast. From the balcony, Table Cape offers 180 degree, unrivalled views, from Low Head in the east, to Stanley in the west. The light is set at the edge of a sheer cliff, where 180 metres below, the sea crashes onto the rugged, rocky foreshore; the scene of many shipwrecks prior to the erection of the lighthouse.

Constructed in 1888, the lighthouse was tended for 32 years by more than 12 lighthouse keepers, many of whom had large families. Today, only the foundations of the keepers’ cottages and a small child’s grave, remain of the community that once lived there.

To learn more of the intriguing heritage of the lighthouse, accompany a small group for an exhilarating 45 minute adventure. The stories of this lighthouse are unique and delivered by animated guides. Celebrate the heritage, through stories of the light; a thoroughly enjoyable short tour. It will entertain, excite and inspire you through the fascinating tales and breathtaking views.
